Business Integrity and Ethics
As I studied this weeks material I was reminded of the
constant need to have integrity in all aspects of business. I have really
reflected on an event that is currently taking place in my life and as I have
tried to think of ways around my dilemma I know that there is only one way to
accomplish it and that is with straightforward honesty. I made the mistake of
going into business with my brother, as his bookkeeper for his other business I
should have seen the red flags and known he would not handle this new business
any differently than he did his current business. I had to resign as his bookkeeper
because he wanted me to book truly personal expenses as business write offs and
there was no legal way to make some of them truly business expenses.
I have been 2 years waiting for him to file the proper taxes
on that business and give me the correct form so I could file my own taxes and
he is refusing, his excuse is that my name is no loner on the business and if
the IRS comes back to audit him I won’t be liable but I know that isn’t the
case. The only way to truly rectify the situation is to file the correct forms.
My integrity won’t allow me to do it any other way. I don’t want to involve a
lawyer as that will put additional strain on the relationship but it is
probably my only option at this point.
